Domain adaptation and attributes vs Material Recognition: are they going to get together, at last?
Abstract: Work on texture and material recognition has been dominated so far by the quest for robust and effective feature descriptors, able to achieve strong generalization abilities. At the same time, the visual recognition community has been investigating actively (a) the importance of methods for increasing the generality of learned models when used over new samples in the domain adaptation framework (b) how to combine textual information with visual features in order to capture information about visual data that is more semantic than perceptual. In this talk I will give a brief overview of these three research threads, will argue on why the last two are of interest for the texture and material recognition community, and will outline possible research directions merging the three fields.
